“Ma, there is so much I want to tell you. I was once foolish enough to believe knowledge would clarify, but some things are so gauzed behind layers of syntax and semantics, behind days and hours, names forgotten, salvaged and shed, that simply knowing the wound exists does nothing to reveal it.”Ocean Vuong’s On Earth We’re Briefly Beautiful is written as a letter from a son (Little Dog) addressed to his illiterate mother, unearthing a family history from before his birth in Vietnam. Like a confessional love poem, beginning from reflections of his childhood, immigrating to the United States with his mother and grandmother to his difficult adolescence growing up in Hartford, Connecticut discovering his sexuality. The central irony being that although we wonder whether the mother will ever read her son’s true words, the book is an attempt for Little Dog to understand the true mind of his mother. Both heartbreaking and heartwarming, Little Dog’s memories build a narrative exploring the complex American identity and inter generational trauma. Read it and weep.

In 2021, Rhea Dillon presented a performance of Catgut – The Opera as part of the Serpentine Gallery’s Park Nights series. Dillon’s libretto ruminates on the conditions and capaciousness of Black performance as experienced through the Black operatic. Taking its departure from The Masque of Blackness by Ben Jonson, a masque commissioned in the early 17th century by Queen Anne of Denmark, the queen consort of King James I, Catgut convened three orators in classic soapboxing fashion. Throughout the opera’s three acts – the essay, the poem, and the poetic – Dillon denounces the idea that the Black performing artist should or could ever exist in the mundane. Jessica Lynne has written an emotional response in essay form, while Simone White has offered a poem to accompany the libretto. The book includes photographic documentation, and concludes with an extensive conversation between Dillon and Elaine Mitchener discussing the trials of performance as an artistic practice.

A plague is spreading across 1920s America, racing from New Orleans to New York. It's an epidemic of free expression, carried by black artists, and its symptoms are an uncontrollable urge to dance, sing, laugh and jive. The state will stop at nothing to suppress the outbreak, but, deep in the heart of Harlem, private eye and Vodum priest Papa LaBas has other ideas - and, possibly, the key to everything. A freewheeling, explosive blend of jazz, ragtime, ancient myth, magic and conspiracy thriller, this anarchic postmodern classic is a satire for our times.

1967: Ye Wenjie witnesses Red Guards beat her father to death during China's Cultural Revolution. This singular event will shape not only the rest of her life but also the future of mankind.

Four decades later, Beijing police ask nanotech engineer Wang Miao to infiltrate a secretive cabal of scientists after a spate of inexplicable suicides. Wang's investigation will lead him to a mysterious online game and immerse him in a virtual world ruled by the intractable and unpredictable interaction of its three suns.

This is the Three-Body Problem and it is the key to everything: the key to the scientists' deaths, the key to a conspiracy that spans light-years and the key to the extinction-level threat humanity now faces.

A collection of poetic short stories written in 1924. The eponymous novel is one of his few books to be translated into English and are recognized today as masterpieces in Japan.

The story follows a tuberculosis and anxiety ridden man that comes across a grocery store selling lemons whilst walking aimlessly in Kyoto and buys one that he likes the look of. The cold textured lemon makes a profound effect on the man, eliminating the heavy weight of his anxiety. “Although I would not like to admit it, for a great many years I had been searching for nothing else but such simple pleasure of the sensation of touching something cold; the sense of touch; sense of smell; vision, now embodied in this lemon. It seemed to me to be a mystery”He takes his lemon to a popular book store in Kyoto; Maruzen and makes his final action of placing the lemon on a pile of books imagining that it were a bomb, soon exploding with his unease. This subversive act of defiance became tradition in Japan, leading to no end of people placing lemons on books in Murazen stores in as tribute to this book.
